Abstract
This study aimed to describe mathematical problem-solving ability viewed from convergent and divergent thinking styles. This was descriptive qualitative research with a purposive sampling technique. The subjects in this study were students of grade XI C of SMP Negeri 2 Sokaraja. Based on the results of the thinking style questionnaire, students were grouped into 2 types of thinking styles, namely convergent thinking styles and divergent thinking styles, then three students were selected from each of these thinking styles. Thinking style questionnaires, mathematical problem-solving ability tests, and interviews were used as the data collection techniques. The validity test used was the data triangulation technique. The results of this study showed that (1) Students with convergent thinking style were not able to understand the problem, plan the problem solving, carry out the problem-solving plans and did not re-examine the steps and results obtained; (2) Students with divergent thinking styles were able to understand problems, plan problem solving, carry out the problem-solving plans and did not re-examine the steps and results obtained.
