Abstract

Suryani, Mei Dian, 1409010021. 2019. Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech: The
Analysis of Anima and Animus. Undergraduate Thesis for Sarjana Sastra Degree,
English Department, Faculty of Letters, University of Muhammadiyah
Purwokerto.
The King’s Speech movie is a 2010 British historical drama film directed by Tom
Hooper and written by David Siedler. This research is aimed to describe
Elizabeth’s and Bertie’s personality as the main characters in The King’s Speech
movie.
This research used qualitative descriptive method. The data were taken from the
movie by cutting some scenes, dialogues, and pictures that related to the topic of
the research. This research mainly used an archetypal approach by Carl G.
Jung. There are four main archetypes in Jung’s theory namely“persona”, “anima
and animus”, “shadow”, and “self”. From the main archetypes, the characters of
Elizabeth and Bertie reflected particularly as anima and animus. From the scenes
whichalso analyze the types of shots through the theory of cinematography. The
archetype of Anima identifies as masculinity in women that is depicted on the
character of Elizabeth, whilst the archetype of Animus identifies as femininity in
men that is depicted on the character of Bertie. Their character as Anima and
Animus also refers to gender equity.
