Abstract

Reading is a skill to obtain information from various written and oral
sources. The researcher used a Blended Learning model that combines two
learning models, namely face-to-face and online. This classroom action research
aims to improve students' reading comprehension skills. The research was
conducted in May 2021 for the fifth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah
Purwokerto. This is a Classroom Action Research with two cycles consisting or
two meetings in one cycle. The procedure of this research refers to the Kemmis
Mc. Taggart including research plan, implementation, action, observation, and
reflection. The research subjects were the fifth-grade student of SD
Muhammadiyah Purwokerto with a total of 23 students consisting of 16 males and
seven females. The instruments, used were teacher and students observation
sheets, oral reading comprehension performance assessments, student face-toface,
and online evaluation sheets. The results of this study indicate an increase in
reading comprehension skills in the first cycle reaching 55.55% learning
completeness and in the second cycle, it increases to 77.78%. it can be concluded
that the implementation of the blended learning model can improve students
reading comprehension skills. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ministry
of Education in Indonesia issued a policy to close schools and replace the
teaching and learning process using the online system.
