Abstract
The purpose of this study was to describe the critical thinking skills of junior high
school students viewed from reflective and impulsive cognitive styles in the
Numbers material. The subjects in this study were students of class VII A of SMP
PGRI 23 Bantarsari. There were 6 students that had been selected using the
purposive sampling method (by consideration). 3 students were supposed to have
reflective cognitive style and the other 3 students with impulsive cognitive style.
This was a qualitative research. The data were obtained from the MFFT
(Matching Familiar Figures Test), written test, and interviews. Furthermore, the
data obtained from the MFFT (Matching Familiar Figures Test) were used to
determine reflective and impulsive thinking styles. Meanwhile, the written test and
the interviews were used to measure critical thinking skills and to validate written
test results, respectively. The findings showed that those with a reflective thinking
style were able to master critical thinking. Their ability to analyze, synthesize,
solve issues, conclude, evaluate, and assess were the indicators. Respondents with
an impulsive thinking style, on the other hand, were often only able to master
critical thinking, with the ability to evaluate and solve problems serving as
indicators.
