This study aims to analyze the mistakes made by students in working on
HOTS type questions about fractions using the Newman procedure. This type of
research is descriptive qualitative. The object used was the VIIA grade students of
SMP N 2 Padamara. The data collection technique used was purposive sampling.
This study used 2 subjects or respondents from each category of high
achievement, medium achievement and low achievement. Collecting data in this
study using tests, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique used
is the technical triangulation technique. The results showed that the high
achievement category students had no mistakes and could solve the problems
well, the category students were making mistakes at the stage of determining the
formula or method used (transformation). errors in low achievement category
students are errors in the stage of determining the formula or method used
(transformation), processing skills (process skills) and errors in writing the final
answer or conclusion (encoding).
