Abstract

This study aimed to describe critical thinking skills on the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Kalibagor viewed from learning independence. The research method used in this research was descriptive qualitative research method. The subjects in this study were students of class VIII A SMP Negeri 3 Kalibagor totaled to 28 students. Sampling was conducted by using purposive sampling technique. In one class, some students were selected based on some criteria of learning independence such as 2 students in start to develop category, 3 students with developing category, and 2 students in accustomed category with criteria of good communication so that the information could be obtained easily. Questionnaires, tests, interviews and documentation were used for data collection. Data analysis techniques used included data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawings. The validation test used was triangulation technique. The results indicated that students in start to develop category of learning independence had not mastered all indicators of critical thinking skills, namely the ability to analyze, synthesize, solve problems, conclude and evaluate. Students in the developing category of learning independence were only able to master indicators of the ability to analyze, synthesize and solve problems. Students with the accustomed category of learning independence had already master all the indicators of critical thinking skills.
