In identifying and concluding the element of short story builder requires the
knowledge of fictional element either intrinsic or extrinsic. It is because the
knowledge of fictional element can create students mindset about what is
contained in a short story. This research aimed to (1) find out the correlation
between knowledge of fictional element and the skill of analyzingshort story on
ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Rembang, (2) explain the correlation
between knowledge of fictional element and short story analyzing skill on ninth
grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Rembang. This correlational research used
descriptive quantitative design and aimed to find out whether there was
correlation between the variables or not. The populations of this research were
265 ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Rembang with 80 students as the
samples who were chosen using random sampling technique. The data of this
research were collected using test and analyzed using product-moment
formulation. Based on the data obtained and the analysis results, there was
significant correlation between knowledge of fictional element and skill of
analyzing short story on ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Rembang that
could be seen by the value of r count > r table (0.490 > 0.220); value of
significance (Sig.) is lower than probability (0.000 < 0.05); value of t count > t
table (4.967 > 1.991). Therefore, the knowledge of fictional element and skill of
analyzing short story on ninth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Rembang had
significant and positive correlation. The better their knowledge of fictional
element is, the better short story analyzing skill they will have.
