Abstract
Thisisa Research and Development (R&D) study.The subjects of the
research were GradeVIII students of SMP Muhammadiyah Sumbang in the
academic year of 2019/2020.There were two types of questionnaires used in this
research.The first was a needs analysis questionnaire to find out the target needs
and the learning needs of the students.The second was a materials evaluation
questionnaire adapted from Instrumen Penilaian Buku Bahasa Inggris SMP to
assess the appropriateness of the developed materials.The assessment was done by
a learning materials expert.This research was conducted by following Dick and
Carey‟s model in Borg,Gall and Gall (2003) with some modification.The first step
was conducting a needs analysis by distributing a questionnaire to the
students.The results of the needs analysis were used to develop the syllabus.The
syllabus was the guideline to develop the first draft of the materials. Then, the
first draft was evaluated by a learning materials expert.The results of thematerials
evaluation were then analyzed through descriptive statistics and used to revise the
first draft ofthe materials.In the target needs,shows that most of the students,
which is 66,6 %, claim that their main goal of using English is to be able to
communicate with the foreigners. The second highest tendency (18,5 %) is that
they want to communicate with the director and their colleagues.In terms of
learning needs, the students‟ view about their learning in reading and writing,
66,6% students want to have texts which have length < 50 words, while the rest of
the students (29,6%) want to have 50-100 words length.Most of the students
(96,2%) claim that pictures is very helpful in their Reading and writing learning
process.Regarding the activities In terms of Reading and Writing activities, 81,4
% students want to have tasks of doing multiple choice by crossing the options
provided. The second type of tasks that the students want to have is arranging
jumbled words (7,40%). Based on the results of the materials evaluation, the
developed materials are considered appropriate. The developed materials have
developed based on the students learning need.
