The aim of this research was to improve students’ reading comprehension
through Team Game Tournament technique. This research was a Classroom Action
Research.
The subject of this research was the student of XE grade at SMA Negeri 1
Kutasari in Academic Year 2011/2012. There were 33 students in XE class, which
consisted of 14 males and 19 females. This research was done on July 2011.
The writer worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class. The
CAR was carried out based on the Kemmis and Mc. Taggart design. The writer took
two cycles consisted of planning, acting, observing and evaluating. Both qualitative
data and quantitative data were taken from observation, reading test, questionnaire.
The result of this research showed that there was significant improvement in
students’ reading comprehension after implementing the CAR through TGT
technique. The average score of the students’ in reading comprehension was 73.33%
in pre-test. The average of the students’ reading comprehension in post-test 1 was
88.48. It improved 20.66% from the pre-test. The average score of the students’
reading comprehension in post-test 1 was 88.48. It improved 22.73% from post-test I.
While the improvement of the students’ activities in reading was 1.82% in Cycle I
and 12.73% in Cycle 2. The data from the students’ questionnaire which were gained
from the six questions showed that the students gave positive responds in reading
activity. The average of the students’ questionnaire was 77.29%. Those data proved
that TGT technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension.
