Abstract

Self-medication is an effort for treating oneself using medicine, traditional
medicine, or other methods without asking any advice from the health workers. It
is usually done to overcome complaints and minor diseases suffered by many
people, such as fever, pain, dizziness, cough, influenza, gastric pains, worms,
diarrhoea, skin diseases, and many more. Based on Indonesia's Health Profile of
2011, skin diseases still occupy the third rank, with the total of 247,179 cases. A
boarding house dormitory is a vulnerable place for the spread of skin diseases.
This research aims to figure out the correlation between knowledge level and selfmedication
behaviour of skin diseases at At-Tholibiyah Islamic Boarding School,
Bumijawa, Tegal Regency. It is an analytic observational research using a crosssectional
approach. The data are collected through questionnaires given to 87
respondents using a Purposive sample. The data are analysed univariately and
bivariately followed by a Chi-square test. The research result indicates that the
good knowledge level of skin diseases self-medication is 71.3% (62 respondents).
The proper self-medication behaviour of skin diseases is 87.4% (76 respondents).
Thus, it can be concluded that there is a correlation between the knowledge level
and the self-medication behaviour of skin diseases, in which p-value ≤
significance level (alpha), that is 0.000 ≤ 0.05.
