This research is entitled "The Ability of Writing Short Story of Eighth Grade Students of Social Science (IPS) Majorin XI SMA Negeri 1 Jeruklegi Cilacap Regency in Odd Semester of Academic Year 2016-2017". The data of thisresearch are scores of short story writing skills of eighth grade students at IPS class 1 to IPS class 4 at SMANegeri 1 Jeruklegi, Cilacap Regency. The source of the data used in this research are short story texts of thestudents Grade XI IPS 1 to 4 SMA Negeri 1 Jeruklegi, Cilacap Regency. The data are collected usingdocumentation technique i.e. the researcher collects the short-story texts of the students from IPS 1 to IPS class 4. Then the texts are analyzed using quantitative descriptive technique. Based on the result of analysis of thescore obtained, it is suggested that writing ability of the students are in good category. All eighth grade students inthe school belong to good category with average score 77.9, 79.5, 84.2, 82.4 respectively. Eghth grade studentsof IPS 1 obtains the lowest average score, 77.9. The eighth grade students of IPS 4 obtains the highest averagescore, 84.2. During the learning process, eighth grade students from IPS class 1 are more calm, while those fromIPS 4 are more active and they quickly comprehend the lesson.
