Clove leaf (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry) is a plant
has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral activity. Based on
the compounds owned, clove leaves can be used as hand sanitizer. This study
aims to formulate and test the effect of ethanol clove leaf gel as hand sanitizer.
This research is an experimental research with gel formulation of clove ethanol
extract with various concentration (5; 7.5; and 10%). For negative control using
without extract and positive control using gel products on the market. The results
showed that the formulation of clove ethanol extract gel complied with
organoleptic test, pH (4-6.5), viscosity test (2,000-4,000 cps), homogenity test,
and spreading test (5-7 cm). The result of antibacterial activity test of gel extract
of clove ethanol ethanol showed that gel formula of clove leaf ethanol extract
could inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria at concentrations of 5;
7.5; and 10%. The best antibacterial action against Staphylococcus aureus power
is shown at a concentration of 10% with an average diameter zone of inhibition
14.95 mm.
