The study was carried out to know students‟ competence and problems in writing narrative text made by eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Wanadadi. Descriptive quantitative was used as a method of this research. The subject of this study was eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah Wanadadi. The writer took 30 students as the sample. The data were collected through writing test. The result of the research showed that there were 37% students who got good score, 60% students who got fair score, 3% student got bad score and no student got very good and very bad score. Thus, it can be concluded that most of the students have a fair score in writing narrative text. Moreover, thatthe highest problem in writing narrative text is content and mechanic with 50% problem.
