Abstract

This research is entitled "Historical Social Conflict in the Novel of Ikan-Ikan Hiu, Ido,
Homa by Y. B. Mangunwijaya". This study aims to describe social conflicts and
factors causing social conflicts in novel Sharks, Ido, Homa by Y. B. Mangunwijaya
This research uses literature sociology approach. The method used in this research is
descriptive method of analysis, which examines the social conflicts in the novel Ikan-
Ikan Hiu, Ido, Homa by Y. B. Mangunwijaya. The data source of this research is
novel Ikan-Ikan Hiu, Ido, Homa by Y. B. Mangunwijaya. The object of research is
social conflict in the novel. Data collection techniques used by the researcher include
reading techniques, noting techniques, and literature study. The research result is
divided into two forms of social conflict and the factors cause the social conflict. The
social conflicts found by researchers in the novel Ikan-Ikan Hiu, Ido, Homa by YB
Mangunwijaya, are: (1) Conflict among social classes which includes: (a) conflict
between the messenger of ternate with the headman of dowing-jo village, (b) conflict
between the royal officials with the coastal resident, (c) conflicts between the Miotilamo
with Juanga Murari prince (d) conflict between the Holan royal officials and the
residents of the Bandar-lontor, (e) conflict between the Jailolo kingdom with the
Ternate kingdom, (2) racial and tribal conflicts which includes: (a) the conflict
between the Ternate resident and the Tidore resident, (b) conflict between the Ternate
sultanate and the Tidore sultanate, (3) interpersonal conflicts or interpersonal conflicts
which include: (a) conflict between Kiema-dudu and Igobula, (b) conflicts between
Kiema-dudu and Bahder musang, (c) conflicts between sultan of Ternate and young
admiral, (d) conflict between the Holan royal official and the Ternate royal officials,
(e) conflict between the master of Gunur-jenggral veose and master Kalangbakar, and
(4) conflicts between nations or citizens which includes: (a) conflicts between
Netherlands and Portuguese, (b) conflict between foreign nations and the royal official
of Ternate and Tidore, and (c) conflict between the kingdom of Bandar–lontor
with Netherland. While the factors causes social conflict are: (a) horizontal plurality
includes: tribal differences and differences in customs; (b) vertical plurality includes:
power and wealth factors; (c) differences of opinion and belief; and (d) include:
political interests and social interests.
