AcuteRespiratory Infection (hereafter ARI) is still the main cause of
mortality to babies and toddlers. In Indonesia, 50%-70% of patients with
pneumonia are appropriately treated with antibiotic and 60% of patients with ARI
consume antibiotic inappropriately. In the previous research, it was found out that
87% of parents stopped the administration of antibiotic to their children when the
condition had improved. The lack of knowledge and proper behavior of the people
toward ARI and the resistance danger of antibiotic make the treatments become
irrational. This research is aimed to find out the effect of counseling education
with the help of leaflet media toward the level of knowledge and appropriateness
of antibiotic administration by caregiver to the pediatric patients with ARI in
MTBS outpatient service of Majasem Puskesmas, Cirebon. The quasi
experimental method was used in this research with pretest posttest with control
group design and posttest only control group design. Accidental sampling method
was used to select the respondents in this research. The data about knowledge
level were analyzed by using Wilcoxon. The result of the analysis shows that p
value with two sides hypothesis test is 0.000 and½p value with one side of
hypothesis is above 0.000. Therefore, it could be concluded that there is
significance difference and improvement on the respondents’ knowledge level
after the intervention. The data about the appropriateness of antibiotic
administration, antibiotic storage, and antibiotic packaging disposal were analyzed
by using Fisher test with the result showing that there was significance value of
0.000 (p<0.05) in the appropriateness of antibiotic administration, 0.039 (p<0.05)
in the appropriateness of antibiotic storage, and 0.011 (p<0.05) in the
appropriateness of antibiotic packaging disposal. Hence, the conclusion could be
drawn that the provision of counseling education with the help of leaflet media
has an effect toward the level of knowledge, the appropriateness of antibiotic
administration, antibiotic storage, and antibiotic packaging disposal by caregiver
of pediatric patients with ARI in MTBS outpatient service of Majasem
Puskesmas, Cirebon.
