Abstract

The aims of this research were: (1) to know the competence of students of
SMP N 2 Sokaraja in pronouncing the words and the sentences, (2) to find out the
errors made by the students in pronouncing the words and sentences. This
research used descriptive method. The writer determined the second grade
students of SMP N 2 Sokaraja as population. There were nine classes of the
second grade of SMP N 2 Sokaraja. Each class was composed of 40 students, so
the total population was 360 students. The writer took 60 students as a sample
taken using purposive sampling technique. After the research was conducted, it
was revealed that the average of students‟ competence in pronouncing the words
and the sentences at the second grade of SMP N 2 Sokaraja in Academic Year
2015/2016 were; first 41.19% for pronouncing the words. It was “fair category”,
6.67% students categorized as “good category”, 41.67% students categorized as
“fair category”, 48.33% students categorized as “bad category”, and 3.33%
students categorized “very bad category”. The second is 69.92% for pronouncing
the sentences. It was categorized into good category. It could be seen that 10%
students categorized as “very good category”, 77% students categorized as “good
category”, 13% students categorized as “fair category”, and 0% students
categorized as “bad category” and “very bad category”. Besides, the writer was
also analyzing the kind of error. After the writer collected the data, it can be
concluded that the most of students‟ errors in pronouncing the words and
sentences were in the sounds of: /θ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/, /f/, /g/, /ʒ/, /f/, /t/, /i:/, /m/, /r/, /æ/,
/ə:/, /au/, /ʌ/, /a:/, /c:/, /u:/, /aI/, /Iə/, /uə/, /εə/, and /eI/.
