Abstract

Binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Tenore) Steenis) stem extract containing
saponins, polyphenols and flavonoids as an efficacious antibacterial is formulated
in ointment forms with a variety of bases. The aims of this research to obtain the
physically stable formulations of binahong stem extract ointment, examine the
binahong stem ointment in variety of bases as antibacterial against S. aureus and
P. acne and effect of variation of base against physical characteristic and
antibacterial ointment activity of binahong stem extract. Binahong stem extract
obtained by maceration method. Binahong stem extract ointment made in
hydrocarbon base, the base absorption, water-soluble base and washable base with
5% concentration of extract. Organoleptic test, homogeneity, dispersive power,
stickiness, pH and antibacterial activity test against S. aureus and P. acne from the
ointments. Test data dispersive power, stickiness and antibacterial activity
analyzed by using parametric statistical test one-way ANOVA while the pH using
T-test. The results showed that the binahong stem extract ointment unstable
physically due to changes of pH during storage. The variation of binahong stem
extract ointment bases had antibacterial activity similarly to that of its extract.
Variations base did not affect the activity of antibacterial. Furthermore, only the
hydrocarbon based ointments meet the requirement of ointment stickiness
standard, while water soluble based ointment meet the requirement of dispersive
power test.
