Abstract

This research was aimed at knowing the students’ mastery of direct
and indirect speech and to find out types of grammatical errors were made by
students in using direct and indirect speech. This research was conducted at SMA
Negeri 3 Purwokerto in academic year 2013/2014. The subject of this research
was the second grade students of SMA Negeri 3 Purwokerto. The method of this
research used a descriptive method. The sample of this research was 65 students,
it was obtained from 25% of the population. The researcher used purposive
sampling technique. The data was collected through the test. The research was
conducted at June 9th 2014. After the data had been analyzed, it was obtained four
categories of students’ individual mastery those were very good, good, fair and
bad. The first category was very good for 81% - 100%, there were 3 students
(4.7%). Second category was good for 61% - 80%, there were 32 students
(49.2%). The third category was fair for 41% - 60%, there were 29 students
(44.6%). The last category was bad, there was 1 student ( 1.5%). The result also
showed that the error the students’ made belonged to three categories, those were;
over generalization, there were 43 (66,9%), ignorance of the rule restriction there
were 26 students (40%) and false concept hypothesis there were 21 students
(33.2%). Those typical errors belonged to intralingual error. The average of the
students’ mastery in using direct and indirect speech at the second grade students
of SMA Negeri 3 Purwokerto in Academic year 2013/2014 was 62.8%. It meant
that the students’ mastery in using direct and indirect speech belonged to good
category.
