Abstract

This a
ims of this research were to find out the students’ level in mastering cleft
sentence and which type of ceft sentence that is better mastered. The method of
the research was descriptive. The fourth semester students of English Education
Department in University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto in academic year
2016/2017, consisted of 104 students, was taken randomly as a sample in the
amount of 46 students or 44% of them. The writer used test which consisted of 30
items of multiple choice and five items of composing cleft sentence. Then, the
result of it was analyzed. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the
mean of students’ mastery was 63.17% an
d it belonged to good category.

-
cleft was 67.22%, whereas, students’ mastery in Wh
-cleft
was 64.35%. Therefore, the students’ level in mastering Cleft Sentence in this
reasearch can be categorized as good and It-cleft is better mastered than Wh-cleft.
