Abstract
This research was aimed at finding out 1) college students’ perception towards
structure five class at English department of Universitas Muhammadiyah
Purwokerto, and 2) the most influencing factor on students’ perception. The
method utilized in this research was descriptive survey method. The subject of
this study was 48 fifth semester students taken by using random sampling as
representatives of the population. Questionnaire was used to obtain the main
source of data and it was endorsed by the supporting data from interview. The
analysis result of the research findings disclosed that the majority of students in
this study held a good perception towards structure 5 class. In fact, there was 65%
of students showed a good perception and 35% of them indicated their perception
in very good scale. It means no one in this study having bad perception towards
structure 5 class. Instructor factor had the strongest influence on students’
perception with the percentage of 21.33%. The percentages of other influencing
factors were linguistic factor (20.91%), student factor (20.52%), instruction
method (20.50%), and the last was provided facilities and media having the
weakest influence with the percentage of (16.74%). Briefly, the survey result
showed a positive outcome. Nevertheless, there were two findings that the lecturer
must pay attention on for the sake of betterment: a) only less than a half of
students studying grammar beyond the lecturing time, b) most of students would
rather ask their friends they think capable of structure materials they are still
confused on than ask the lecturer.
