This study is to improve the students' poem writing for the seventh graders in a junior high school of SMP Negeri 2 Sumpiuh, Banyumas Regency. The improvement was by applying a contextual approach. This is a classroom action research conducted in the school, in semester 2 of the academic year of 2015/2016. The subject of the study is the students of the seventh graders in group C. There are 34 students (14 male, 20 females). This action research was undertaken in a period of 8-23 April 2015. It was implemented in two cycles, with four stages in each. They are planning, acting, observing, and refelecting. The data collection was done by testing and non-testing of observation. The data analysis was done through a qualitative and quantitative descriptive. Based on the analysis, it is proved that the contextual approach application can improve the students'competence of poem writing in the school. This can be seen from the increase of their competence from each stage. After the first cycle, their average score is 73.78, and the precentage of learning mastery was 50% (17 students)~and the highest score was 94.84. And the result of the second cycle shows that their average score was 82. 96, and its learning mastery was 85.2% (29 students), with a highest score of 93,93.
