The title of this research ts "a semantic study on unique and interesting nicknames of
students at Sekolah Dasar Negeri 1 Gumiwang Wonosobo Regency in academic year
2016-2017". This research aimed at describing type of naming and meaning of unique
and interesting nickname of students at Sekolah Dasar Negeri 1 Gumiwang Wonosobo
Regency in academic year 2016-2017. This was a qualitative descriptive research. The
data in this research were in a form of 40 unique and Interesting nicknames. The data
are collected through questionnaire and interview techniques. Data analysis was
conducted using referential equivalent method with basic technique of determinant
sortir. The advanced technique to do was relate-compare-sychronize and relatecompare-
differentiate technique. The data were analyzed using informal method by
formulating common words. From the analysis, it could be concluded that: (1) type of
naming based on voice imitation (2 data), typical characteristics mentioning (21 data),
origin mentioning (2 data), similarities mentioning (3 data), abbreviation mentioning
(4 data), deviated name mentioning (4 data), and profession mentioning (4 data); (2)
type of denotative meaning (40 data), conotative meaning (25 data), referential
meaning (40 data), and figurative meaning (3 data).
