Abstract

Motivation is regarded as the main factor for successful language learning.
With
out
sufficient levels of
it, the successful l
earning can
hardly
be
achieved.
Regarding this issue, t
he present research was aimed to explore types and levels of
mot
ivation of learners in an Indonesian private university
.
The research used
descriptive method using survey technique.
151
third semester learners of
non
-
English majors
of
Faculty of Education and Teacher Training of an Indonesian
private university in acad
emic year 2015/2016
participate
d
in th
is research.
Q
uestionnaire was
administered
to the
learners
to find out
types and levels of
motivation
.
The result
s
revealed
that (1) types of motivation of the learners were
more integrative (M=3.72) than instrumental
(M=3.70). Furthermore, (2) the
learners were mo
derately motivated (M=3.71). This
indicated that
the learners
learnt English in order to be able to communicate in English and they would learn
English even if it were not obliged by the university.
These res
ults imply several
suggestions: (1) in TEFL practice, lecturers should provide the learners with
appropriate instructional materials, (2)
teaching learning process
should be
stimulating
and
(3)
assessment
techniques must stimulate and sus
tain learners’
motivation.
