Abstract

Background: Kencur (Kaempferia galanga, L.) rhizome contain ethyl-pmethoxycinnamate
(EPMS),a cinnamic derivate which has sunscreen properties.
Temu kunci (Boesenbergia pandurata (Roxb) Schlecht) rhizome contain
flavonoid and essential oils with oxidant radical scavenging properties.
Objective: This research aims are to obtain the optimum physical properties of
sunscreen and antioxidant cream using Simplex Lattice Design (SLD) method and
to compare sunscreen and antioxidant activity of kencur and temu kunci rhizome
extract before and after formulated.
Methods: The method of this research is SLD model with 2 components of the
kencur extract (A) and temu kunci extract (B). Based on the model will be
obtained design optimum formula then performed measurements of the SPF and
antioxidants activity with DPPH method.
Results: Cream with kencur extract composition 50-100% and 0-50% temu kunci
extract is a formula optimum. The study show that the SPF value of 80%:20%
cream formula is 5.024, 70%:30% cream formula is 4.511. Antioxidant activity
show that the IC50 of 80%: 20% cream formula is 109.15 ppm, 70% : 30% cream
formula is 95.23 ppm, the temu kunci rhizome ethanolic extract, BHT and
Vitamin E velues were 10,20 ppm, 22,33 ppm and 8,78 ppm.
Conclusion: The combination of kencur purified extract and temu kunci rhizome
ethanolic extract is not decrease sunscreen activity from kencur purified extract in
single form. Antioxidant activity of that combination was lower than temu kunci
extract before formulated, BHT and Vitamin E.
