Abstract

The research entitled Analysis of Mental Retardation Students’ Language for
the Fifth Graders at SDLB Gumilir, Cilacap in the Academic Year of 2012-2013 aims
to explain or describe four language aspects of phonology (sound of language),
morphology (word structure), syntactic (sentence structure), and semantic (word
meaning).
This research was descriptive qualitative research. The research data was
mental retardation students’ utterances for fifth graders (Class C) at SDLB Gumilir,
Cilacap in the Academic Year of 2012-2013. The data source was the fifth grade
mental retardation students (Class C) at SDLB Gumilir, Cilacap in the Academic Year
of 2012-2013. Data collection was carried out by listening method and tapping
technique. The data analysis used comparative and distributive methods and
advanced technique of PUP, HBS, and BUL. The result of data analysis was
presented through formal and informal methods.
The result of research included aspects of phonology, morphology, syntactic,
and semantic. In the aspect of phonology (sound of language), there were phonemes
pronounced inappropriately or replaced by another phonemes: [e] replaced by [ə], [a]
replaced by [o], [u] replaced by [o], [u] replaced by [i], [t] replaced by [d], [r]
replaced by [l], [h] replaced by [t], [v] replaced by [p], [l] replaced by [r], [m]
replaced by [n], and [s] replaced by [š]. In the aspect of morphology (word structure),
the research discussed affixes wich consisted of prefix, infix, suffix, confix, and affix
combination. Mental retardation students have been generally able to use affixes
correctly, but some still incorrect for ber- and peN-. In the aspect of syntactic
(sentence structure), the students have been able to used word clause and non word
clause. In the aspect of semantic (word meaning), the students have been able to
understand theacer’s purpose although some error of students’ understanding to
theacher’s utterance or teacher’s understanding to students’ purpose still occured.
