Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the English teacher’s strategies in managing large classes.
This research belonged to case study which the participant was an English teacher of
SMA Negeri 2 Purwokerto. The technique which was used to determine the
participant was purposive sampling technique. The data was obtained by using
interview and classroom observation. The analysis showed that the English teacher
used two kinds of classroom management strategies in managing large classes those
are classroom management preventive in form of classroom rules, seating
arrangement, giving praise to prevent students’ disruptive behavior and students’ who
did not pay attention, but to stop students’ disruptive behavior and maintain positive
class condition the teacher used classroom management intervention in form of non
verbal communication that cover eye contact, body orientation, facial expression,
gesture, vocal variation, beside that the teacher also employed behavior intervention
in form of indirect signals, and implementing consequences. Beside those ways, the
researcher found out other ways which were not the target but those are useful, such
as questioning, humor, interesting material, pointing to students, showing care and
giving attention, advice.
