Abstract

Grammar teaching is still a debated issue in second and foreign language classes. The conflicting views lead to a dilemma, whether teachers need to teach grammar in their English classes and how best to teach it, explicitly or implicitly. This study aimed to investigate teachers’ perception on grammar teaching and their preferences for types of grammar teaching strategies (i.e., implicit or explicit). The participants in this study were 36 English teachers from 25 high schools (2 senior high schools and 23 vocational high schools) in Banyumas Regency. In this study, the researcher used a quantitative research design with a four-point Likert-type questionnaire adapted from a previous study and supported by interviews. Data analysis reveals that teachers have positive responses to the importance of grammar in English classes and the instructions to teach it. The mean percentage shows that 78.9% of teachers think grammar is essential and needs to be taught. In addition, most teachers (82.6%) prefer to teach grammar explicitly. However, the teachers (78.2%) view implicit instruction as being able to be used in English classes. Both instructions can be applied to teaching grammar. Two teachers interviewed add that it all depends on the difficulty level of the material that will be learned and the situation.
