Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the use of movies with English subtitles to improve vocabulary. This study used a quantitative approach by utilizing descriptive research. The participants in this study were 53 students of English Education Study Program in a private faith-based university. A closed-ended questionnaire was used as an instrument in this study and a 5 Likert Scale was engaged to measure students' perceptions. The overall percentage result of this study was 80.6% showing that students had a positive perception towards the use of movies with English subtitles for vocabulary acquisition. According to the results of the study, most students gained some benefits from movies with English subtitles. Most students perceived that movies with English subtitles helped them acquire a lot of new vocabulary, made vocabulary learning easy, and motivated students to learn English. However, students still face challenges when watching movies with English subtitles as vocabulary learning, as most students cannot understand difficult or unfamiliar words.
