Abstract

This study employs a mixed-method approach by integrating quantitative
word analysis with descriptive qualitative appraisal analysis. Focusing on editorials
from Philippine News Agencies and the South China Morning Post, the research
investigates language choices made by news editors using Appraisal Theory to trace
the discourse in editorial content related to geopolitical tensions in the South China
Sea. The results of the appraisal analysis are then utilized to decipher the editorial
discourse through the meanings constructed by language choices, referencing media
framing and politics. The aim of this research is to unveil the discourse of the writers
through the construction of meaning embedded implicitly in editorial columns. The
study seeks to underscore the interplay between language, media presentation, and
public perspectives.
