Problems in Translating Indonesian Academic Text Into English. Undergraduate

This research aims to find out the issues with translation on students' academic
essays. In this study was that the majority of beginning translator students in
translation classes frequently translate texts word by word without first reading
them in their entirety. The findings show that the translation problems involved
several linguistic aspects, such as grammatical problems and lexical problems
such as incorrect verb and spelling words. The qualitative method was used to
collect the data for this investigation. This research is also supppoerted by
questionnaire for all students after translated the academic text, and interview to
several students who has high and low score to deepen the research result. With
this addition, the result may show the another problems that‘s tudents face in this
research. In conducting this research, the researcher applied Mathieu's (2003)
theory on translation issues and for the linguistic and non-linguistic challenges
with student translation can be examined. From the analysis, the researcher finds
the problems in translation process from student essay analyzing as it is
represented by Waldorf. The result would be classified by the type of problems
and counted according to classificiation. Without altering the original text's intent
in the slightest, translators should be able to convey the meaning that was
intended in the source language to the target language (Waldorf: 2013).
