Abstract
The objectives of this research are to find out the target needs and the
learning needs, to develop appropriate student worksheet based on higher order
thinking skills (HOTS), and to find out the expert evaluation toward the worksheet
based on HOTS for the seventh grader students of SMPN 1 Purwanegara in
English teaching.
This research is classified into Research and Development (R&D) study. It
uses 4D learning model (define, design, development, disseminate) that was
developed by S. Thiagarajan, Dorothy S. Semmel, and Melvyn I. (1974). There
are two kinds of questionnaires used in this research. The first is the needs
analysis questionnaire to find out the target needs and the learning needs of the
students. The second is the expert judgment questionnaire to assess the
appropriateness of the developed materials. The data of both questionnaires are
analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics.
This study developed four units of materials based on Curriculum 2013. Each
unit has four main parts: identity, per-activity, main activities, and post activities.
Regarding the students’ learning needs, the input is in the form of spoken and
written texts and grammar explanation. The main activities apply the five steps of
scientific approach: observing, questioning, collecting, analyzing and
communicating. Based on the data analysis from the content expert judgment, the
mean value of all aspects of the four developed units, in the scales of 1 - 4 is 3,48.
It is in the range of 3,25 < X̅ ≤ 4,00 so it is categorized as “Very Good”. The
results of design expert judgment for all aspects get the mean value of 3,46 which
can be categorized as “Very Good”. The mean value of students’ responses is 3,42
or 85,68% so it is categorized as “Very Good”.
