Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the mathematical problem-solving ability of seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Jeruklegi reviewed from self-directed learning. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The data of this study were obtained from the results of self-directed learning questionnaires, tests of mathematical problem-solving abilities, and interviews. Students were grouped into three groups based on the results of the questionnaire, namely students in the high, medium, and low self-directed learning groups. The research subjects were selected using purposive sampling technique. Test and interview data were used tobdescribe students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. The results of this study showed that students with the high self-directed learning group were able to meet the indicators of understanding the problem, compiling a solution plan, doing calculations according to the plan, and checking the results obtained. However, in the moderate self-directed learning group, the respondents were only able to fulfill the indicators of understanding the problem, compiling a plan for completion, and doing calculations according to the plan. Meanwhile, the respondents in the low self-directed learning group were able to meet the indicators of completing the steps to understand the problem and compiling a solution plan.
