Abstract

This research involved forty-eight university students majoring in English
Language Teaching. viewed from their language background, the researcher
comprised two groups: one group with Indonesian as their first language or
mother tongue (L1), while Javanese as a second language (L2) and other group
with Javanese as first language while Indonesian as the second one. the aim of this
survey study was to compare which group pronounced better. this study was also
meant to explore the problematic sounds of English for both groups. the data were
collected through pronunciation test and interview. the interview was conducted to
identify the respondents' language background. the main findings of this study are
1) students with Javanese as a second language pronounced the English sounds
better than those students with Javanese as their first language did, even though
that was not statistically confirmed yet, 2) Javanese learners of English
encountered the most dominant errors in pronouncing consonant sounds /v/, /θ/,
/ʒ/ and vowel sounds Sound /e:/ , /ɔ:/, /æ/ , /eɪ/ , /ɛə/, /i:/, /aʊ/
