Abstract

Background: The use of several plants that are usually used for cooking spices as traditional medicine has been carried out for a long time. Cardamom is one of the plants from the Ziggerberaceae family which is widely used as traditional medicine. The dried fruit of Piper nigrum is morphologically similar to cardamom seeds, which may be used as a sampling error. Papaya seeds are assumed to be one of the counterfeit materials because papaya seeds are papaya fruit waste that is discarded by the community because they are considered unimportant so that the price is low, easy availability, and similar in structure. This study aims to identify and authenticate cardamom using the FTIR spectroscopic method with a combination of chemometrics. Methods: 2 simulations of cardamom mixture formulations with ratios of 0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25, and 100:0 the mixtures were analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy. PCA analysis is used to facilitate data grouping. Results: IR spectrum produced by cardamom, pepper, and papaya seeds at wave numbers 1000-3375 cm-1. The results of standard PCA analysis of cardamom, pepper, and papaya seeds can be separated into 3 different quadrants. Powder mixture of cardamom and pepper can be separated well into 3 different quadrants. Powder mixture of cardamom and papaya seeds can be separated well into 3 different quadrants.
