Abstract
This research was aimed to know whether the use of picture series for teaching vocabulary was effective or not. This was a quasi-experimental research. There were two classes as the samples of the research, experimental class and control class. The samples of this research consisted of 54 students with the experimental class taught vocabulary using picture series while the control class using regular teaching. This research was conducted through giving pre-test, applying treatment, and giving post-test. The data were gathered through the test. The findings of this research showed that 1) the students in the experimental class had increased some scores from pre-test to post-test with the class mean result from 38 to 48 and the mean deviation 10, but lower than that of the control class with the class mean result from 43 to 53 and the mean deviation 11; 2) the use of picture series was not effective for teaching vocabulary than the use of regular teaching particularly for verb, noun and adjective in learning topic recount text through writing and retelling story activity and it could be seen from the t-test result which was lower than t-table (the t-value was 0.416, with degree of freedom 52 at the significance level 5% in t-table = 1.674).
