Abstract

This study was conducted to figure out the perceptions of the students about the English pronunciation accuracy and their English pronunciation accuracy as well. It was also aimed to seek the relationship between their perceptions and their pronunciation accuracy. The study employed the questionnaire to obtain the perceptions and it was analyzed using descriptive statistic. The standardized pronunciation test on Elsa Speak Application was a tool to gain their English pronunciation accuracy and it served the test score data for this study. The relationship between them was obtained by SPSS. Research results reveal that (1) the students perceive English pronunciation as the important aspect of effective oral communication and considered it as the essential matter to elaborate their English skill. They perceive that their English pronunciation was influenced by their peers’ pronunciation as well as their mother tongue. (2) Their pronunciation accuracy was in the level of intermediate due to the means of their test scores that was 60. The result showed that there was higher mean score gained by the female students than the males even though it was slightly different. The females achieved higher mean score in the phonemes group of /ʃ/,/ʒ/,/tʃ/,/dʒ/ while the males obtained higher mean score in phonems group of /w/, /v/, /b/. (3) There was positive relationship between their perceptions and their pronunciation accuracy.
