Abstract
The objectives of the research were (1) to describe methods used in teaching speaking at the eighth-grade students of MTs Negeri Nusawungu and (2) to describe the students’ impression in teaching English especially in speaking learning process. The method of this research was survey study. In this school especially for eighth grade students, there was one English teacher in which the teacher taught five classes. The population of the research was 170 students of five classes at the eighth grade, in which each class consisted of 33 or 34 students. The sample of this research were the teacher and 43 students of the eighth grade. Observation, interview, and questionnaire were used to collect the data. Observation was done to observe the teacher in the teaching and learning process in five classes. Interview was given to the teacher to support the researcher’s observation. Questionnaires were distributed to the students to get the data about students’ impression in teaching English especially speaking learning process. After collecting data, the data was analyzed through data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. From the data analysis, it could be concluded that (1) the methods used by the teacher were Direct method and Community language learning and (2) the students’ impression in teaching English especially in speaking learning process was positive which meant that the teacher used appropriate media, material and exercise.
