This research aims to identify the types of politeness principles used by the main
characters in Crazy Rich Asians movie and investigates how the politeness
expressed in the movie to make this research deeper. Object of the research is
Crazy Rich Asians movie. The main characters that become the object of analysis
are Rachel, Nick, and Eleanor.
In conducting this research, the researcher applied politeness principles theory
by Geoffrey Leech. The research also analyzes how politeness is expressed in the
conversation by Wijana’s theory. The researcher uses qualitative descriptive.
Data of the research is taken from the utterance in the script of the movie that
has been collecting into three main characters.
From the analysis, the resaecher concludes that the most of politeness principles
applied by main characters is approbation maxim. The main characters mostly
used direct literal. This is because the main characters in this movie give more
praise to others and create good impression in conversation. This will minimize
the conflict in the conversation.
