Abstract
The language and literature learning, especially short stories writing
require learning resources that support the teaching and learning activities. Low
ability to write short stories and the limited learning resources used in Junior High
School as a basically reason for the researcher to do some efforts to develop
teaching materials in the form of modules which are suitable for the students
characteristic and needs . The purpose of the development and the research are to
produce a product in the form of modules of how to write short stories based on
the evants of ninth grade students’ experience in semester 1. Module development
had been written based on the ten steps of the development model of Borg and
Gall (1983:72) which were adapted into five steps of the model development of
Puslitjaknov (2008:8) . The development procedure consists of five steps are 1)
the product analysis step that is going to develop, 2) the step of developing an
early product, that is the step of preparing a product of how to write short stories
using contextual approach, 3) the step of validation and revision expert. 4) the try
out step for a limited group and product revision and 5) the step of a real try out
and the final product is that a module application to write short stories for ninth
grade student of Junior High School that is very reasonable to use according to
some experts by considering some aspects. They are 1) The reasonability of the
content with scores 3.7 and 3.9, those are very good categories, 2) Presentation
with scores 3.8 and 3.7, those are very good categories, 3) language with scores
3.7 and 3.6, those are very good categories, and 4) Graphic with score 3.8 and 3.8,
those are very good categories. Even The students’ responses to the short story
Writing Module in a small group as well as a big one are generally in a very good
appreciation. The students’ responses on a small group try out for some aspects
such as material, presentation, language, and graphic are generally in very good
ones as well as to the modules with evenly score 4.8. The students’ responses of
experimental class to the material, presentation, and language aspects, are
generally in very good ones to the modules with evenly score 4.6, while the result
of the students’ achievement in the experimental class based on the statistical test
calculation with t test is different, obtained the result of t count =8.701 significant
level a = 0.05, obtained t table 1.67155, so t count (8.701)>t table (1.67155), so it
was concluded that learning with modules is more effective than do not us it, and
can improve the students’ ability of experimental class to write short story with
the increase score of pre-test to post-test is 19.01, and 84.49 % increase in the
percentage of minimum score
