The aims of this research were (1) to find out the types of code switching used by the teachers, (2) to reveal the teacher’s reasons in using code switching and (3) to identify the student’s perception about the use of code switching in Math teaching learning process. This research was descriptive qualitative and quantitative one.
The object of this research was the use of code switching by Math teachers at RSBI Schools. The population in this research was the seven grade Math teachers and students of SMP N 1 and SMP N 2 Purwokerto in academic year 2011/2012. The samples of this research were VII E and VII C’s Math teacher and students. The techniques of collecting the data were interview 1, observation, interview 2 and close questionnaire. The techniques of analyzing the data were coding and classifying.
After collected and analyzed the data, the writer found 79 utterances which contained code switching. Those were 23 utterances of situational code switching, 7 metaphorical codes switching, and 14 tag switching, 11 inter-sentential switching and 24 intra-sentential switching. The teacher’s reasons in switching the code were to make the students understand the material and to increase both of students and teachers English fluency. The average scale of the students’ perception on the use of code switching by math teachers was 4.162. It means that generally, students agreed with the use of code switching in their math teaching learning process.
