Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types of motivation and the major motivation that the Second Semester Students of English Education Department University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto have in learning English. The kind of research used in this study was survey study. The population of this study was 77 students of Second Semester Students of English Education Department University of Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. There were 77 students as the sample. The writer used 2 instrument, namely: close questionnaire and semi-structured interview to collect the data. After the data were collected and analyzed, the result showed that there were 3 types of motivation that the students have, namely: intrinsic motivation, instrumental motivation, and integrative motivation. The instrumental and integrative motivation belonged to extrinsic motivation. The highest type of motivation was intrinsic motivation with the mean 4.12, followed by instrumental motivation with the mean 3.91. The lowest type motivation was integrative motivation with the mean 3.5.
