This research was entitled "Improving students' ability in effective reading
with PQ4R (Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, Review) method in Grade VII E
of SMPN 1 Baturraden. The research objectives were to make description of students'
ability improvement in effective reading with PQ4R method. It was a class action
research and conducted in two cycles with two meetings of each There were pretest
in early research stage before cycles and post test at the end of cycle I and cycle II.
Data collection were accomplished by test and non test, while data analysis were
through descriptive quantitative method. The result of the pre test was students' fast
reading ability reached 172 words per minute (wpm). Students understanding ability
on pretest only reach 50% completeness, and the average of effective reading ability
was 129 wpm. At the post test of the first cycle, students caught average score of fast
reading ability at 191 wpm., 22 students or 66.67% were 100% complete, while 11 or
33.33% of students were uncomplete, and the average of understanding ability were
78.81, then, the average students reading ability were at 147 wpm. At the post test of
the second cycle, the average students ability on fast reading were 295 wpm, 31
students or 93.93% were 100% complete, while 2 or 6.06% of students were
uncomplete, then, the average students reading ability were at 257 wpm. From the
data above, it could be inferred that the students' ability on effective reading in every
cycle was improved. Therefore, the conclusion of this research was PQ4R could
improve their ability on effective reading in VII SMP N 1 Baturraden.
