Abstract
During the menstruation period, a woman usually experiences a pain from
mild to severe—a condition so called dysmenorrhea. Using analgesic to overcome
the problem should follow the right procedure. The scale of pain should be the
determinant to choose the right medication. The purpose of this study is to find
out the relation of knowledge and dysmenorrhea pain scale towards of analgesic
use among the students in non-health vocational high school in Purwokerto. This
is an analytic observation study, employing a cross-sectional study approach. The
data were collected using questionnaires. The study had 94 respondents screened
by proportional random sampling which has qualified inclusion and exclusion
criteria. The data were analyzed using Chi Square with significance value of P <
0.05. Based on their knowledge, univariate analysis shows that 45 (47.9%)
respondents are high, 43 (45,7%) of them are medium, and the rest of them are
low. From their pain scale, 23 (24%) respondents have a mild pain, 51 (54.2%)
are in medium, 19 (20.2%) have a severe one, and a respondent (1.1%) has a very
severe pain. Seen from their analgesic choice, 69 (73.4%) respondents prefer to
use a mild analgesic, and 25 (26.6%) respondents take NSAID (Non Steroidal
Anti Inflammatory Drug). Bivariate analysis on the knowledge variable gives a P
value of 0.02 (<0.05) meaning there is a relation between their knowledge and
their analgesic choice. Meanwhile the analysis on the pain shows a P value of
0.186 (>0.05) meaning there is no relation between the pain level and their
analgesic choice.
