Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating teachers’ question types and students’ responses in English interaction. This research belonged to survey study in which the participants were five English teachers and students from five classes in SMAN 4 Purwokerto and SMAN Ajibarang. The data were obtained from observation and interview. The transcripts from observations were analyzed to reveal the teachers’ question types and the students’ responses toward the teachers’ questions. The interview was also conducted to enrich the data. The findings of this research revealed that there were five teachers’ question types used by the teachers. They were Yes/No questions, short-answer questions, open-ended questions, display questions, and referential questions. Each type had different purposes such as asking students to display their knowledge, discovering things about students and their knowledge through referential questions, checking students’ comprehension, confirming and clarifying students’ understanding. Regarding students’ responses, there were three types of students’ responses namely student specific response, student open ended response and silence category.
