Abstract

The aims of this research were (1) to know the kinds of instructional strategies which are used by the English teacher and (2) to know the dominant instructional strategies which are used by English teacher in a public Junior High School in district Kembaran, Banyumas. It was an analitycal desciptive research with total sampling technique as the sampling technique used in this research. The population of this research was three English teachers in a Public Junior High School Students in district Kembaran, Banyumas in academic year 2016/2017. The data was collected by using the interviews and observations. The result of this research that there were 18 instructional strategies used by English teachers, they are: (1) Academic Vocabulary and Language (SIOP 100%; Word Wall 100%; Read aloud 100%, Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum 70%), (2) Cooperative and Collaborative Learning (Strategic Grouping 50%; Think Pair Share 30%; STAD 20%), (3) Direct Instruction (Lecturing 100%; Modeling 100%; Homework and Practice 90%; Summarizing and Note Taking 10%), (4) Cues, Questions, Activating Prior Knowledge (Effective Questions 100%), (5) Class Discussion (Analysis of Students Work 80%, Targeted Feedback 90% and Student Self-Assessment 70%), (6) Project Based Learning 20%; Problem Based Learning 80%, and (7) Discovery/ Inquiry Based Learning (Hands-on Learning 100%). However, the dominant instructional strategies which are used by English teachers were: (1) Academic Vocabulary and Language (SIOP 100%; Word Wall 100%; Read aloud 100%), (2) Direct Instruction (Lecturing 100%; Modeling 100%), (3) Cues, Questions, Activating Prior Knowledge (Effective Questions 100%), (4) Discovery/ Inquiry Based Learning (Hands-on Learning 100%).
