The aims of this research were to know the level of students’ achievement in writing
narrative texts and to know the kinds of errors in writing narrative text.
This research was conducted in SMP Negeri 2 Sumbang on January 2013. The subject of this
research was the second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Sumbang in academic year
2012/2013. The sampling was carried out by using random sampling technique which means
that 20% (28 students) from population was used as the sample. In order to get the data
needed, the researcher asked them to make a simple narrative text with the design given. The
obtained data were then corrected and categorized based on accuracy of the content and
theme, the grammar accuracy, coherence among sentences, complexity (precise in using word
and term), and tidiness of the writing form(spelling).
After the data have been analyzed, it was found that the level of student’s achievement in
narrative text writing was in category “fair”. It was showed that the means of students’
achievement was 65.30%. The form of errors data were classified based on the surface
strategy taxonomy. Those areomission, addition, misformation, and disordering. There were
161 grammar errors (70 or 43.5% of misformation errors, 21 or 13% of addition errors, 51 or
31.7% of disordering errors, 19 or 11.8% of ommision errors).
