Abstract

This research examines how gender equality is represented in the movie Wonder Woman (2017) through the application of Judith Butler’s Gender Performativity Theory and Cinematography Theory. The study focuses on the ways in which the film portrays and promotes gender equality by challenging patriarchal norms and traditional gender roles. The representation is embodied in the performative actions of the main character, Diana, which include speaking out in male- dominated spaces, taking leadership in battle, rejecting male authority, and protecting society. Using a descriptive qualitative method and textual analysis of selected scenes, the study highlights that gender is not a fixed identity but is constructed through repeated actions. The findings reveal that Diana’s character provides a transformative representation of womanhood—powerful, empathetic, and morally driven—while resisting submissive stereotypes. This research contributes to media and gender studies by demonstrating how cinematic narratives can represent and reconstruct gender roles, influencing societal perceptions of women’s leadership and independence.
