Abstract

Nurjanah, Rosanti Siti 1909010031. 2025: Gender Inequality and Workplace Dynamics: A Case Study of Chloe Domont’s Movie of Fair Play (2023). Undergraduate thesis for Sarjana Sastra degree, English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This research aims to explore the persistence of gender inequality through contemporary works, such as the movie Fair Play (2023), which addresses gender stereotypes rooted in The Feminine Mystique. Therefore, this study analyzes using Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique (1963) and cinematography to interpret the picture; hence, the research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The research yielded two key results: 1) Challenges Emily Meyers faced, such as gender-based discrimination, negative assumptions about her competence, fragile masculinity expressed by her secret fiancé Luke Edmund and her coworkers, sexual assault, and emotional suppression; 2) How Emily navigates the male-dominated, highly competitive work environment by employing strategies such as performative assimilation, emotional regulation, and adapting to masculine professional norms. The study is significant for its contribution to feminist literary criticism, as it demonstrates that gender stereotypes originating from The Feminine Mystique contribute to gender inequality in contemporary works
