Abstract
Putri, Risma Emiliani. 2025. Exploring Interpersonal Relations on the Main Characters in the Maleficent Movie Using Psychological Approach. Undergraduate Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication. Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto.
This research examines the journey of Maleficent and Aurora in the sequel one. Focuses on the relationship that is established between the characters. The research applies the psychological theory of the Hierarchy of Needs, developed by Abraham Maslow. The five primary needs are basic, safety & security needs, social needs, ego needs, and self-actualization. The analysis of the research on the film Maleficent is conducted through the examination of dialogue and characterization of each role, demonstrating the progression of Maleficent’s needs from the lowest to the highest level. This is achieved using a qualitative method that emphasizes the experiences, opinions, and actions of the characters in the movie. The process of analysis reveals the correct result, which aligns with Abraham Maslow’s theory. Initially, Maleficent feels safe living in the Moors with the other creatures, as well as Aurora, who was born as the princess of the kingdom. There is an external figure who is someone trusted by Maleficent. However, due to a separate reason, Stefan Aurora’s father betrays Maleficent by cutting off her wings. Maleficent feels unsafe and disappointed until she curses Aurora as a way of taking revenge. Whereas, in the middle of the conflict that occurs, Maleficent particularly cares for Aurora as well as the mother and daughter. Those process depicts how the characters of Maleficent illustrate the Needs of Maslow. This affects the way she interacts with others, and ultimately, she realizes as before, with affection. The illustration of the characters in the Maleficent movie conveys that the relationship dynamics changed over time, regardless of the form it took. The transformation of interpersonal relations gives meaning to personality and the struggle of facing complex changes
