This research aims to analyze how the negative stigma surrounding age-gap relationships is portrayed in The Idea of You and how the main character struggles to challenge the societal stigma associated with these relationships. The researcher enriches the discourse on Freud’s psychoanalysis and Foucault’s theory of sexuality, particularly in the context of age-gap relationships and how society’s perspectives regarding this issue evolve. The research revealed that this film narratively and visually dismantles and challenges the social construction associated with the relationship between adult women and younger men who had a considerable age difference of sixteen years. The relationship between Solène and Hayes read as a form of age-gap relationship or, in Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic approach, classified as the Oedipus Complex, where the mother figure becomes the subject of the young male’s desire. This relationship not only reflected an unconscious dynamic but also a resistance to the norms of heterosexuality that position women as passive objects. The research showed how adult female sexuality considered a subversive issue and should preferably be eliminated. However, Solène, as the main character, decided to break the stigma by having a relationship with a young male boyfriend.
